Food Bank Information

A local resident Jennifer Puzzo asked me a great question, about the location of food banks in the area. As many of you know I have been active with the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Avon Food Pantry collects donations of non-perishable food items year-round. Please help make the upcoming holidays a little bit nicer for Avon Township families by dropping off your donations to the Village Hall or directly to Avon Township at 433 E. Washington Street (847-546-1446).

Here is a list of food banks in Northern Illinois for your benefit.

T-Shirt Raffle

The Village sponsors many things, among the recent things we sponsored is the Grant Township 5K Field of Dreams race. As a perk of sponsorship they sent me an extra shirt. Its a white XL T-shirt with the race logo on it, and the sponsors in back. I got one for my plodding finish in the race 49th out of 120, and don't need another T-shirt in my closet.

So if you look good in white, promise to use it for its intended purpose, and are the 3rd emailer, its yours!

Please note the winner was Tom Lake who was emailer number 3 out of 15.

Is Illinois the Gerrymander State?

One of the most fascinating things about the state of Illinois is the sheer volume of taxing bodies there are. This village has an unreal amount of taxing bodies that fall inside our boundaries. I am going to list them, and I am sure I will miss some, in fact I can guarantee I will. The picture is appropriate sometimes when you deal with the number of taxing bodies in the area.

Train Station Improvements

One of the goals of my administration has been to improve our Metra station. We have been able to get funding for improvements to the Long Lake Metra Station via a CMAQ grant recently. Hopefully we will be adding over 200 spaces to that station along with a walking path connecting it to Valley Lakes.

We also applied for funding, and got it, via the federal government's Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century provides money for state Transportation Enhancement Programs (ITEP in Illinois). The idea is to enhance transportation systems while building more livable communities and improving the quality of life. NOTE: For the life of me I can't recall how much money we got, its way to early in the morning for that type of thinking!

Davis Clark our Director of Public Works and our Engineering department recently met with IDOT to kick-off the ITEP funded Metra Corridor Beautification and Pedestrian Access project that we recently received funding for.

The scope of work we are comptemplating is as follows:

  • Concrete bin and foundation removal.
  • Embankment replacement and general grading & leveling and seed the site north of the tracks.
  • Extension of paver sidewalk north of the tracks along the west side of Cedar Lake Road.
  • Construct an ornamental fence along, and parallel to, the north side of the tracks to prohibit pedestrians crossing at a non-controlled section of the tracks.
  • Provide tree and shrub landscaping along the north side of the tracks and possibly additional street lights if necessary.

In accordance with the terms of the ITEP fund, the Village can be reimbursed for 80% of the cost for Phase II engineering for the project. However, the village may opt to pay 100% of the engineering which would provide more Federal dollars toward construction and also eliminate the need for an additional agreement to be processed allowing engineering to begin in a more timely fashion. So as you can see the village board has some say on how we proceed and at what speed.

I have a very preliminary concept plan here which might be tough to see but it gives you and idea of what we are thinking about. Please email me at bgentes@eroundlake.com for a copy.

Girls Track and Field-- Grant and Round Lake Style

For the first time in 11 years Lake Forest High School is not the IHSA sectional champion! Grant High School is! Grant completed a remarkable double by beating Lake Forest in the conference and then in the sectionals. Last year Grant finished 7th overall in State and we are hoping for higher this year. Why do I follow girls track? I love track and field as many loyal readers know, but even better my daughter Denise is on the Grant team! Although she is not going downstate, nor was she able to compete at sectionals. However I am very proud of her.

But just as exciting is Round Lake High School's Sandrea Smith who also qualified for state in the 400 meters. I have known her since she and my daughter were girls scouts together when we both lived in Treehouse in the Woods. Sandrea has broken 60 seconds for the 400, and let me tell you that's blazing fast!

Had an Active Mayoral Day on Thursday

I had a variety of missions yesterday, I had a meeting with the Hospital Task force which is progressing quite well currently. More to come would be the operative phrase here. Ask me about it if you see me.

The second meeting was a committee meeting of all the 120 Corridor Planning Council at the College of Lake Counties University Center. Well attended (see picture) all the committees reported with maps and details on the progress to date. What we need now is the funding from the Illinois tomorrow grant which Senator Link and Representative Osmond have procured for us. Arrival date is next month or so. Then we can hire a consulting firm to do the actual pre phase one feasibility study.

The next thing I did was attend the monthly meeting of the Storm Water Management Commission where I am a board member representing 12 communities including Round Lake on the SMC issues. All I can say is I heard the word's "nutrient farming" and nutrient management bank" and was still quite interested in the presentation.

In addition the board was presented with a mason jar full of sludge that apparently either A. Satan B. Antioch C. SMC or D. Corporate Evildoers were spreading out on this gentleman's property either intentionally or intentionally. At one point the sludge was being waved around directly over my head, which made me yearn for the comfort of the village halls dais and not the cramped board room at SMC.

Busy Weekend So Far as I Race Through It

Yesterday I attended the democratic gathering of candidates in for Lake Villa, Grant, Antioch and Avon township. There was a nice crowd of people, and a nice crowd of candidates as well. Democracy and the two party system appears to be thriving in Lake County.

I went from the Democratic gathering to the Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce's Annual Installation Dinner, where we had a nice turnout of trustees. Trustee Don Newby, Trustee Jerry Shaw and his wife Liz, Trustee Brian Brubaker and his wife Lori, Trustee Sherry Perkowitz and her date Kevin Hedlund, and last but not least Trustee Patricia Blauvelt and her husband Mike. Patty was honored with a plaque for 15 years of service to the Chamber of Commerce as a Board Member! Congratulations!

Today I am running in the Round Lake Area Park District, Frosty 5K. All proceeds from the race benefit the senior fitness programs. The race kicks off with a 10 a.m. registration and 11 a.m. start from the Sports Center located at 2004 Municipal Way in Round Lake Beach. Hot soup and awards will follow the competition. As we all know I run in a few races throughout the year with some success and some races with no success. However my goal today is to get under 28 minutes and 30 seconds.

Some Excellent News for Parking at the Long Lake Metra Station

A few months ago I wrote about the CMAQ Grant for the Long Lake Metra Station. We had a meeting last week with the Metra designer for a first look at the plan.

We will have 310 spots for the Long Lake station. The picture here is an overlay of the neighborhood in Valley Lakes that will not be built (created by John Gutknecht of Valley Lakes). If you want more details of the who, what, where, why and how my prior blog article on this gives an in-depth look at it.

Okay what does this do for us? Well it gets us two major parking nodes for the village. In the downtown we have existing 360 spots with the addition of 310 spots we will have 670 spots. Then when you add in about 100 news spots at the Round Lake Station with the Public Works move coming soon. In addition the current proposal for our Downtown has an additional 350 spots in two parking garages. Which puts us over 1,000 spaces at 2 stations. Metra's station studies indicate that basically when you build a parking space it will be parked in. Downtown we average 95% occupancy in our parking.

Grant Township-- Picnic in the Park is today

Today is the Grant Township "Picnic in the Park" which kicks off at 8am with a 5k race that yours truly is running in. This ought to be a personal disaster! Because of the heat and a very busy schedule I have not run much, and have focused on lifting weights at the air conditioned gym the last few weeks. My goal is to run in under 30 minutes (9:40 miles) over the 5K distance. We shall see, I am not hopeful. The backup goal would then be to survive the race!

I would urge runners and non runners to stop by the event held at the township headquarters on Molidor road. There are softball games, volleyball and of course a picnic. Say hi to Kay Starostovic the Township Supervisor who does an excellent job as your supervisor and as an organizer of the picnic!

UPDATE: Okay the race was run I ran in 34:05, I saw a few Round Lake area friends and residents running, Jose Velarde and his family, Steve Berwanger and his family, Len Dam and dispensing water Fox Lake Mayor Cindy Irwin. The highlight for me was the assigned number (1) how cool is that. The lowlight was the hills that I plodded up and down and seemed to never end.

CMAQ Grant and the Long Lake Station

Yesterday's passage of the large federal transportation bill should be bringing a few million dollars to the Village of Round Lake. We applied for a CMAQ grant (the Congestion mitigation Air Quality grant) two years ago in a partnership with Lake County, Grant Township and Metra. Unfortunately the first go round of the request for funding Metra decided at the last minute not to include this project in the funding (conveniently forgetting to tell myself and Lake County Board Member Bonnie Thompson Carter until after the submittal date infuriating the two of us!). The second go round was much more successful after Bonnie and I "encouraged" Metra to prioritize the project.

The thinking and basic facts behind the application for the grant was as follows:
  1. The Long Lake Metra Station (number 2 on the map above) has roughly 40 parking spots, and residents were complaining about cars being parked on the grass(number 3 on the map above) and illegally along Long Lake Drive.
  2. The intersection of Long Lake Drive and 134 (number 4 on the map above) is very dangerous, in fact a few years ago thier was a fatality there.
  3. Valley Lakes Neighborhood 13 was located across the street (number 1 on the map above). This was a single family neighborhood platted for 28 homes in the Valley Lakes PUD.
The concept we came up with was for Metra to purchase neighborhood 13 from Pritzer (Valley Lakes Development company owners) and create a parking lot for the station across the street from the station, replacing the 28 homes scheduled to be built at some point on the site. In addtioin the station would be remodeled and improved on. There would be a spot where we could have some small retail for the station as well. In attain the intersection would also get a traffic signal to facilitate people crossing the street from the parking lot safely.

From the village's perspective this is a nice concept which provides us with some positives.
  • A reduction of 28 houses.
  • Increased parking for Metra inside the village limits, and the revenue for that parking.
  • A path from Valley Lakes to the station for any residents who commute via Metra.
  • A traffic signal improving traffic flow all along the 134 corridor from Wilson into our downtown.
  • Added retail for the area and our bottomline.
Over the next few days we will get a better handle on the status of the funding and the possibility of making the project a reality. Numerous things hinge on the varibles out of our control, these varibles were made increasingly diffucult by missing the first go round of CMAQ funding last year.

Saturday Night at the High School Booster Club Outings

Last night we attended the Grant HS booster fundraiser/bowling "soiree" and at the same time the Round Lake Panther Pusher "soiree" was held in the same place with Grant getting food and then bowling, and Round Lake bowling then eating. We had a nice time with all the couples at dinner, and then we bowled! I was abysmal, the first lady and I teamed up for a 88 and a 82 alternating shots, and then in the goofy bowling we rolled a sizzling 59, the highlight being a strike by myself left-handed (my only decent shot of the evening). I also struck out on the raffles, and the 50/50 as well. Who says being Mayor is not fun!
