Arbor Day Recap

The third annual Arbor Day event was Saturday, April 19 at the Village Hall and celebrated our 2nd year as a Tree City USA. The rain held off long enough for the crowd to play some tree trivia, do some kid activities, have a snack and select from over 100 trees the village provided.

Our thanks again to our sponsors Home Depot, Highland Green Nursery, The Acres Group, Turks Nursery and Lurvey's. Residents had their choice of evergreens, hybrid elms, oaks and beautiful flowering dogwoods. Officer "G" made a special appearance and took pictures with the kids.

Arbor Day Celebration

We celebrated Arbor Day yesterday by giving away 100 trees to the first 100 families you showed up at the Village Hall at 11pm, there was a very nice crowd and quite a lot of energy.

The most energetic person in the crowd was the Trustee Sherry Perkowitz, who was the driving force behind the the village getting the Tree City designation and the organizer of the event. I took a picture of her holding the plaque we received and standing next to the sign you will start seeing around town designating us as a Tree City!

Arbor Day Festivites this Saturday

The Village of Round is proud to announce that it has been awarded the coveted Tree City USA designation, and in celebration, will be hosting its second annual Arbor Day Event. The expanded celebration will be held at the village hall at 442 North Cedar Lake Road on Saturday, April 21st, at 11:00am. Come join myself and the trustees as we read the Village’s Arbor Day Proclamation.

There will be activities for the kids, refreshments and a free tree to the first 100 Round Lake families donated by our event sponsor’s: Home Depot, Highland Green Nursery and Lurvey’s Garden Center in Des Plaines, IL. There will also be licensed arborists on-hand with information and tree planting advice. For additional information you can contact Trustee Sherry Perkowitz who has done a great job coordinating the whole process.

If you want to know what happened last year go here! Just the pictures alone are reason enough to attend this year! Because if you see those trees in this picture, thats what was given away until we ran out, so its first come first serve to the first 100 families!

Round Lake is awarded Tree City USA designation

Thanks to the efforts of Trustee Sherry Perkowitz the Village of Round Lake has been named a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The recognition results from the village’s commitment to community forestry.

For more than a decade, Illinois has ranked second in the nation for the number of communities participating in the Tree City USA program.

Illinois Tree City USA communities spend $82 million annually on tree planting and care,” said IDNR Tree City USA Program Coordinator Reinee Hildebrandt. “Urban and community forestry is a part of a $4.7 billion industry in Illinois.”

Four criteria must be met to be eligible to participate in the Tree City USA program:

  • A community must legally designate a city official or volunteer tree advocate as having authority over the management and care of the community’s urban forest.
  • A community must have a community tree ordinance that specifically recognizes the local tree authority and identifies urban forest management and tree care standards by which the community will abide.
  • The community must invest at least $2 per resident in its urban forestry program.
  • Communities must conduct an annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony with an official Arbor Day proclamation.

“This recognition showcases the dedicated efforts of our public works employees, elected officials and village administration in planning, planting and caring for our community forest. This prestigious award is an excellent indication that there is a solid foundation in place for making Round Lake one of the most desirable communities in western Lake County,” said village trustee Sherry Perkowitz.
