SWALCO-- Electronics Collection

This month’s household electronics collection was a huge success! We had a total of 178 people drop off their electronic equipment for recycling. The result is a pile of computers, monitors, TV’s and stereos that is 60 feet long, 18 feet wide, and averages 4 feet high. I have written about collections in the past and have a great picture here.

Our next collection will be Tuesday March 13th from 8am to 5pm. Great job by our Public Works department!

Here is a picture of the SWALCO Household Chemical Collection that we held last Saturday. There were 150 people served in 6 hours. Kudos to PW Director Davis Clark and his staff for organizing this and the other ones he has since he took over the department. Some links to recycling type posts in the past. Here, here, here and here.

SWALCO Electronics Recycling Drive was Yesterday

Davis Clark our Public Works Director sent me an email and the above picture updating me on how much was collected during our SWALCO recycling drive.
"There are at least 40 PCs, a dozen printers, a dozen TVs and radios, coffee makers, bug zappers, DVD players, VCRs and a whole bunch of other things. We had 35 cars stop in and drop off as of 4pm with one hour left to go."
When we hired Davis this was one of the things that excited us about his vision for the position. So good job to all the Public Works staff who helped and of course all the residents who dropped things off as well!

Earth Day Flag Presentation at Village School

I was able to present an Earth Day flag to Village School yesterday, on behalf of SWALCO. Chris Geiselhart a HIGHLY committed employee for SWALCO coordinated the whole thing. There was a full house of kids and you would be amazed to know that the kids led by teacher coordinator and bundle of recycling energy Monica Dobre collected 50 sports shoes (sneakers, etc) for the Reuse-a-Shoe program. These are processed into sports surfaces such as track, basketball courts, football and soccer fields, keeping them out of landfills and making something new.
They also collected 4,603 pounds of paper, over two tons. Which is about the weight of 6 cows! Or 13 mayors? Not sure which. As always with Village School I had a wonderful time seeing the kids and interacting with them.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the kids instantly forgot about me when the next act came on...authentic Chinese Acrobats who were spinning about 40 plates on 3 sticks when I left.

Recyling Efforts Growing by Leaps and Bounds in Round Lake!

Three years ago the Village adopted a new program for recycling. The yellow topped containers (sort of Packer-like colors) that are slightly smaller are designed solely for use on recycled material. The program was quite well received because it did away with the old open bins, which had paper flying around the neighborhoods. Plus it was bigger.

I got some information from the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) that shows how the village has increased its recycling over the last few years.
Total tons collected
2003-- 537 tons
2004-- 1,211 tons
2005-- 1,540 tons
Even though we have grown dramatically since 2003, doubled in size, we have tripled our recycling tonnage.
